Jazz Up Movie Night

Fun ways to jazz up your horror movie night experience.

Prompts and decorations.

One way to jazz up any movie night is to add prompts and decorations to go with your theme. Ours being horror, we can add black balloons or one helium red balloon like in the movie “It” with Pennywise. Add life-size cardboard cutouts of your favorite movie character or one of the movie being played. For instance, add a Pennywise cutout with the red balloon. String orange or dark purple lights around the room with cozy black blankets and pillows. (Pennywise)

Another fun inexpensive way is to purchase horror movie posters. (view horror movie posters here). Post them in your viewing area and place fake bags of blood around the floor. Add candles or lanterns that will provide dim light and ambiance.

Halloween mask help make the night more frightful. If your watching a Friday the 13th movie add a Jason mask and a fake knife prompt.

Special drinks.

No fun night goes without a cocktail. Make in batches and place in a pitcher so you don’t have to keep getting up to make fresh ones. Try an orange candy corn cocktail, but plan ahead on this one, it’s a few hours to make the candy corn-infused vodka.

Recipe: 1 1/2 cups vodka, 1 cup candy corn, 3/4 cup pineapple juice or diet 7-up. To make candy corn-infused vodka, mix vodka and candy corn in jar; seal tightly and let stand at least 4 hours. Strain vodka to remove candy. For each serving, in chilled cocktail shaker, place 1/2 cup infused vodka and 1/4 cup pineapple juice or 7-up, add ice. Shake and pour into martini glass.

Want your drink to glow in the dark try a Black Light Lemonade. All that’s needed is tonic water, lemonade mix, and a black light. Refrigerate your tonic water so that it is nice and cold to serve. You won’t want to put ice in it because it will dilute it. Put tonic water in a pitcher or punch bowl. Stir in drink mix, I use crystal light. Serve to guests. Remember no ice. Must have black light.

What’s creepier than a Brain Cocktail? Nothing. Recipe: 1/2 oz. peach schnapps, 1/2 oz. bailey’s irish cream, dash of grenadine. Pour peach schnapps into a glass. Slowly add the bailey’s irish cream by pouring over a spoon and top with a dash of grenadine.

Looking for a color changing martini? Recipe: 1 1/2 oz. gin or vodka, 3/4 oz. ginger liqueur, 1/2 oz. simple syrup, 1 Dropper of b’lure butterfly pea flower extract, 3/4 oz. fresh lemon juice. Add all the ingredients except the lemon juice into a shaker with ice, and shake until chilled. Strain into a martini glass, add the lemon juice to change the color.

Witches Brew. 2 oz. vodka, 2 oz. triple sec, 2 oz. blue curacao. Pour equal amounts of the alcohol into a shaker over ice. Shake, than strain into a chilled martini glass that has been rimmed with black sugar.

Grab that popcorn! Make your favorite seasoned popcorn along with a yummy Halloween chex mix or werewolf kibble. If your looking for something warm a Devililshly Hot Pimento Cheese Dip is the answer. Recipe:

1 large round pumpernickel bread boule

3 tablespoons unsalted butter

1/4 cup minced yellow onion

1 clove garlic, minced

1 tablespoon mustard powder

1/2 teaspoon sweet paprika

3/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

1 1/2 teaspoons salt, plus more if needed

3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1 1/2 cups whole milk

8 ounces cream cheese, softened

12 ounces extra-sharp Cheddar, shredded

3/4 cup roasted peppers or pimentos, drained and finely diced

1/4 cup hot green Chile, drained and finely diced

Freshly ground black pepper

First, prepare the bread boule by slicing off the top 2 inches and hollowing out the center, leaving the walls of the boule about an inch thick. Cut the top and insides of the bread into bite-sized cubes and set aside.

In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onions and cook until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute.

Whisk in the mustard, paprika, cayenne and salt; cook for an additional 2 minutes. Sprinkle the flour over the onion/garlic mixture and stir to combine; cook about 2 minutes more. Gradually whisk in the milk and gently simmer for 2 minutes. Add the cream cheese and stir until it melts. Then add the Cheddar cheese. Once all the cheeses are melted, stir in the roasted peppers and hot green Chile. Season with black pepper to taste and additional salt, if necessary.

Preheat the broiler on high.

Scoop the pimento cheese mixture into the hollowed-out bread boule and place on a baking sheet. Broil until the top begins to bubble and lightly brown, a couple of minutes. Place the filled boule on a platter and serve immediately with the bread cubes.
