Haunted Prisons, OSR And Alcatraz

One of the most famous haunted prisons in America.

Looking for a real haunted experience?  Try the Ohio State Reformatory located in Mansfield, Ohio.  OSR has a documented history of paranormal activity and is a premiere location for paranormal enthusiasts.  Public ghost hunts are public paranormal investigations of Ohio State Reformatory held on selected Saturday nights and you must be 18 years or older.

The facility has 250,000 square feet to investigate and a sixth tier free-standing cell blcok.  One of the largest in the world.  It has a East and West cell block, chapel, attic, admin and a solitary confinement is explore.

Their were more than 154,000 inmates who passed through it’s gates in it’s 94 years as a working prison.  No matter what their crime, some sent to Mansfield never made it out.  They rest in a graveyard just outside the fence, 215 numbered markers laid out row on row.

The worst occured in a place beneath the prison ground, a place called local control or solitary confinement, known as the hole. Near total isolation can crack down the toughest of cons, but none was so alone there wasn’t room for death.  At least one manged to hang himself and another set himself on fire.

The bloodiest single incident in the old prison’s history occured outside it’s walls.  In July 1948, the reformatory’s boss, his wife and daughter were kidnapped and shot to dealth by two parolees bent on revenge.

The East Wing on the 1st floor has been a good place for experiences and evidence.  Rarely do they have a night where nobody experiences at least a few shady people down there.  The third floor gets a lot of people.  Guest experience seeing shadow people, audible voices, footsteps and the feeling on not being alone.  One guest entered the West attic and refused to go back in.  Both cell blocks areas have brought grown men to tears as many murders and suicides took place there.

It is also the filming site of the movie, The Shawshank Redemption.

As of 2018 the reformatory welcomes more than 120,000 vistors per year.

Alcatraz Island is another prison deemed haunted

Also known as Alcatraz or The Rock, it was a maximum security federal prison located off the coast of San Francisco, California. Given the high security of the island’s location in the cold waters and strong currents of San Fransico Bay, it was believed to be escape-proof and America’s strongest prison.

Alcatraz gained notoriety from its inception as the toughest prison in America. Described as “the great garbage can of San Francisco Bay, into which every federal prison dumped its most rotten apples.”

Former prisoners reported brutality and inhumane conditions which severely tested their sanity. If they broke one of the prison’s many rules they would end up in the “strip cell.” Before entering the strip cell, the prisoners were stripped naked. The worst cell had no mattress, no sink, and no lights. The only toilet was a hole in the ground.

Some of the worst criminals in America including Arthur Doc Barker, Machine Gun Kelly, and Al Capone spent many days behind bars in this prison.

During its 29 years of operation, the penitentiary claimed that no prisoners successfully escaped. A total of 36 prisoners made 14 escape attempts, two men trying twice; 23 were caught, six were shot and killed during their attempts, two drowned, and five are listed as “missing and presumed drowned.”

Now it’s a popular ghost tour attraction. Spirits from the inmates can’t move on from the experience and from the Alcatraz Island itself.

Al Capone spent his final years here. He spent most of his downtime playing a banjo in the prison’s shower room to avoid mixing with other prisoners who were trying to kill him. In recent years, many visitors have heard the eerily upbeat sound of a banjo emanating from that very spot.

The sounds of men’s voices, screams, whistles, clanging metal doors, and terrifying screams are said to be heard within these historic walls, especially near the dungeon.

Isolation cell 14-D is often reported to be almost 20 degrees colder than the rest of the cells on the block. Where a prisoner was found strangled after screaming all night that a creature was trying to kill him.

More than 1 million people visit Alcatraz Island every year, making it one of the top tourist attractions in the entire country.
