Robert Berdella, often referred to as “The Butcher of Kansas City,” was an American serial killer who terrorized the Kansas City area between 1984 and 1987. His crimes shocked the nation with their brutality and the sadistic nature of his acts.
Berdella was born on January 31, 1949, in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. He grew up in a troubled family environment, experiencing a strained relationship with his father. As a child, Berdella exhibited signs of cruelty towards animals, which is often considered a precursor to violent behavior later in life.
In 1967, Berdella enrolled at Kansas City Art Institute to pursue a degree in photography. He gained a reputation as a skilled photographer and opened his own shop, where he worked and sold artwork. However, behind this seemingly normal facade, Berdella was leading a double life as a sadistic killer.
Jerry Howell
Berdella’s reign of terror began in 1984 when he picked up a 19-year-old man named Jerry Howell from a local bar. He took Howell to his home under the pretense of offering him a place to stay. Once inside, Berdella drugged and tortured Howell, subjecting him to unspeakable acts of sadism. Over the course of several weeks, Berdella kept Howell captive, inflicting severe physical and sexual abuse on him before finally murdering him.
After his death Berdella moved his body to the basement where he suspended Howell’s body above a large cooking pot, and made several incisions to the youths inner elbow and jugular vein. He left the body suspended overnight to allow the blood to drain from his corpse.
The following day, he dismembered Howell’s body using a chainsaw and boning knives, before wrapping the sections in newspaper and trash bags. These bags were later placed inside larger trash bags which Berdella placed outside for a garbage crew to collect and take to a landfill site.
Subsequent murders
Berdella’s modus operandi involved luring young men, usually prostitutes or runaways, to his house with promises of money, drugs, or shelter. Once inside his home, he would incapacitate them using various methods, including drugs, hypodermic needles, and electric shocks. Berdella would then subject his victims to weeks of horrific torture, which included beatings, sexual abuse, and even genital mutilation.
He also applied caustic chemicals, such as bleach, to their eyes, causing them excruciating pain and temporary blindness. To prevent his prisoners from screaming, Berdella placed gags in their mouths. He also injected drain cleaner into their vocal cords so they wouldn’t be able to cry out and the binding of his wrists with piano wire with the intention of permanently damaging the nerves in his hands, and filling their ears with caulking to reduce hearing capacity.
Some victims torture included repeated administering of 7,700-volt electrical shocks to the shoulder and testicles for up to five minutes in each instance, and acupuncure via hypodermic needles to the neck and genitals.
Throughout his killing spree, Berdella murdered at least six young men: Jerry Howell, Robert Sheldon, Mark Wallace, James Ferris, Todd Stoops, and Larry Pearson. His victims’ remains were disposed of in various ways, including burying them in his backyard, burning their bodies, or dissolving them with chemicals. Berdella would later confess to his heinous acts in chilling detail.
Diary and pictures
Berdella logged all the acts of torture he inflicted, as well as how his victims reacted. He even went so far as to write down every word they said in a 58-page journal. Berdella also recorded the doses of sedatives he administered to keep victims compliant, as well as the antibiotics he gave them to prevent their wounds from becoming infected.
In addition to the logs of his crimes he took Polaroid pictures of his victims. The photos were sometimes taken over a period of weeks while he kept the men confined in his home.

Larry Pearson
On August 4, 1987, Berdella’s sixth victim, 20-year-old Larry Pearson, retaliated against Berdella after being imprisoned for more than five weeks. Pearson bit Berdella’s genitals during a sexual assault, and the injury caused Berdella to go to the hospital, where he was informed he would need to be admitted for surgery.
Berdella first returned home, however, telling the doctor he had to feed his dog, and murdered Pearson before going back to the hospital for treatment.
The escape
After taking six young men’s lives, Robert was finally captured because of his final victim, 22-year-old Chris Bryson. On April 4, 1988, after subjecting Bryson to four days of torture, Berdella left Bryson tied up in an upstairs bedroom while he went to work for the day. Bryson was able to get his hands on a pack of matches, which he used to burn through the ropes Berdella had tied around his wrists.
Wearing only a dog collar, Bryson jumped from a second-story window and ran to a neighbor’s house for help.
When questioned, the officers also noted that in addition to the dog collar and broken foot, Bryson had red, swollen eyes, and visible scars and welts across his entire body.
The capture
On April 2, 1988, the police executed a search warrant at Berdella’s home. Inside, they discovered a house of horrors, with multiple skulls and evidence of his sadistic acts scattered throughout. Berdella was arrested and charged with multiple counts of murder, sodomy, and torture.
During his trial, Berdella pleaded guilty to all charges, avoiding the death penalty. Instead, he was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. While incarcerated at the Missouri State Penitentiary, Berdella became notorious among fellow inmates for his manipulative nature and attempts to exert control over others.
However, on October 8, 1992, Berdella’s reign of terror came to an end when he died in prison from a heart attack at the age of 43. His gruesome crimes and the sadistic nature of his acts continue to haunt the memories of those affected, leaving a chilling reminder of the depths of human depravity.
Wow what a psycho. It would be cool to see an article about Roy Demeo and his mafia crew who killed like 150 people and dismembered them. Dude was so whacko that the mob bosses had him killed.
Thank you for your feedback. I will look into Roy Demeo and follow up with an article.
